I myself am doing Engineering in Information Technology!
You have got to understand that IT-market is really hot at the moment and ofcourse all are trying to capitalize on it. It is a very promising branch indeed ( You ofcourse need to hone your skills...and thats also applicable to any other industry!)
What you are concerned about is not wrong either... manufacturing industry dose need talented people and there are many in the making...so dont worry about that!
And ofcourse dont we all feel that our field of working is of much more importance than any other?!

I'll tell you why, and this from me , an IT Manager...
I'll tell you why I went for it.
The studdying is quick, a year course, and you're well away, also the subjects are easy, and normally very practical.
The pay also is quite good! It seems like the ideal job for any young person, however, had I known before what I know now, I wouldn't have gone the IT route, yeah it's fun in the beginning, yeah the pay is allright, but it gets increadibly tedious when things goes wrong for no apparent reason, and when you're to blame because the company's production is down because of virusses that btw was downloaded "by accidents" by a disgruntled employee...

It's really a nice yet crappy carreer. If I could, I'd do it all over, and become a Civil Engineer.

This really is the truth, but there are reasons for it:
1) The work environment at any IT industry is better (no shop floor, no workers, only AC rooms wid coffee dispensers and cute co-workers)
2) The package disparity is a very big factor while choosing the jobs even at the entry level
3) IT and ITeS industries are usually associated with more robust HR practices and better and innovative employee rewarding schemes
Keeping in view of the above, plus the fact that IT sector is increasing salaries as much as 30-40% ('coz its expected that IT sector alone will have a shortage of 5lakh people by 2010), its normal for any graduate, and more so if he/she is a professional student, to opt for a IT job

IT is an easily trainable job, and even up until now can make you a quick buck.

However, making a career of it requires you to be proactive in your education and job choices. That means making the shift from being a terminal jockey to an engineer. There are many a former IT pro peddling unemployment offices because they were kicked out by junior college grads who know as much as they do but get paid half as much, or their job was farmed out overseas.

It's not strictly the fault of schools for not cranking out manufacturing-oriented engineers as much as there's not as large a need for them in the manufacturing industries. Blame a lot of that on IT for making the process more efficient.

Exactly. Industrial Age is OVER.
And it is Information age.
So Talent is going to the right place.

BTW IT is directly connected to Engineering too.
The thing is APPLICATION of IT in every sector.

To use the information to minimize the cost, reduce the
production cycle time, and improve the quality.

Let me introduce my self first.

I am from Gujarat, India

I had completed Diploma in Electrical Engg. in 1998. After completion of my Diploma I was looking for the job in my local area (in Kutch). And got the one job in Industrial area.

The company was repairing the Transformers. I had worked in this company for 7 months. It was to very labourer, job working hours was 7 morning to 7 evening and no holidays on Sunday!!

I was too tired from this job.... my Salary was Rs.2400 in 1999

Fortunately I had learned computer in private institute. So I decided to go in IT (though I don't have good qualification)

Got the job in NGO.....

I had worked in this organisation for 7 years.... my starting salary was Rs.1700 only in Mar-1999 and after increment in this time my last salary was Rs.8600. After 7 years.

After 7 years I had to left this organisation. The organisation had not employed me as permanent staff after 7 years. I was fired due to some problems...

Then I decided to go to corporate sectors....

I joined in as Computer Operator. I am working with this company for last 8 month. My salary is Rs.5000 only!

****
What I have learn from my past ?

* There is more scope in Technical job / Engineering. If you see Times of India's Ascent you will found 80% Civil/Elect./Mech./Fire fighting job.
* Though there is not good pay in technical job in starting but after the upgradation of post i.e. junior engineer then senior engineer then manager etc. you will get around Rs.25000
* My boss is getting Rs.25000 + per month. 1 engineer is getting Rs.16000 + and newly appointed is getting Rs.8000.
* Good infrastructure companies also provide telephone bill, house rent, elect. bill, petrol and much!
* There is no scope in IT, unless you have good qualification like MCA, M-Tek and you know the latest software like JAVA, ASP.net, SAP, Oracle.
* Office work is boring compared to site work in technical job.
* No much increment in salary in IT job.
* In technical job, once' you got the graduation, no further learning is required. Only experience is count and experience is important. On the other side in IT job you have to upgrade with new software and your knowledge because market is keep changing and new software available next day!!! it is very difficult to cope this. How long you will learn all this? after 35 years????
* I think technical jobs are still important. Today IT is on high due to craze. Technical jobs like civil is all time hit and will give you good position, increment, upgradation in post.
* Our indian institute like Aptech, NIIT, LCC, SSI foolish students and telling them that you will got the job in companies after doing our so and so courses. They are taking more money from the students. Giving them false dreams. Which will never come true. There are only interested in their money. Even the faculties are not qualified.

* It is very dangerous to go in IT except good qualification.
