...or some other kind of head covering? It goes way beyond simple fashion, it often has a religious connotation. Especially in more traditionalist/fundamentalist cultures having something on your head often seems mandatory for males and females. From yamulkes and headscarves for orthodox jews to bonnets and wide-brims for Amish and everyone in between. In Western countries the practice has declined in the last 40-odd years (except for baseball caps) but before then men and women follwed a similar custom. What I want to know is...why!?!?
