Actually this isn't quite a simple yes/no answers in the UK. Usually you would need a gambling licience to play cash games of poker, which a pub wouldnt have. however to need a gambling licence the game you are betting on has to be a game of chance where luck is the main part of the game. however poker isnt just a game of luck, it also involves skill.

In a landmark case this year the government took the Gutshot poker club in London to court to close them down for not having a gambling licence. The gutshot argued that poker was a game of luck. so a court of law had to decide whether poker was luck or skill. Now unfortunetly for the gutshot it was found to be a game of luck and therefore any poker cash games played in an unlicenced premises is illegal. The gutshot is appealing this ruling, however dont hold your breath as if poker was found to be a game of skill the government cant tax it, so they wont let this happen.

In Canada, it's illegal to play poker for money unless it's a scheduled "poker night". They buy poker chips, use them, and cash them at the end of the night. But, there isn't big money, it's usually for quarters up to one dollar so a major win is around $75 - 100 is you take the whole pot. By the way, this is done in the legions and pubs here.

playing poker anywhere is legal...as long as you are not playing for money. Use chips,or have prizes like they do in the pubs. For so many wins you get so many points that can be exchanged for a trip or cruise.

It depends where you live, each locale has different laws. If you started playing actual poker for real money there are only a few places that would permit that.
