Check out Danagua Falls which is a series of waterfalls. A must see are both Sosua and Cabarete which are beach towns 20-30 minutes away. If you get to Sosua stop off for breakfast at QuiXotes Restaurant on Pedro Clisante. They owner will be happy to tell you what to see in town.
If you Golf the nicest or one of the nicest in the entire caribbean is Playa Grande.
If you take a trip on the north coast heading east you have Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, Cabrera, Nagua, Las Terenas, Las Galares and Samana. You won't lack for things to do.
The Teleferico which is a cable car in Puerto Plata goes up Mt. Isabela and is a nice half day trip.
Go to Ocean World in Confressi and take in the show at their casino.
Have a great time and bring suntan lotion, bugspray and school supplies for the children.

You can take the cable car ride up the mountian that overlooks the city. You can visit the national amber museum. You can visit the 400 year old spanish fort there. You can lay on the beach and do nothing at all.
