I think they got a shot, but I honestly don't think they'll win it. There is too many teams better than them (New Jersey, Buffalo, Pittsburgh), but they got some good players in Ryan Smyth, Richard Zednik, and Jason Blake. They also got Mike Sillinger, and Rick DiPietro has been getting better than he was at the start of the season. They can do something and possibly make it to Round 2, but I can't see them getting much farther, unless other players step up, like Poti.

I would love to believe that the Islanders can win the Cup, but I don't believe that they will win the whole thing. They have allowed a surprisingly low number of goals relative to the rest of the league, but their offense is not potent enough. Dipietro is a streaky goalie, which could spell success of failure depending on how he is playing right before the playoffs. If the Islanders play any team other than the Devils, Sabres, or Penguins in the first round of the playoffs (assuming they make the postseason) they should win the series. Past the first round it will be iffy, especially since they will be a low seed in the playoffs. Hopefully they do make it and manage to win it all.

Only if hell freezes over. Their defense is not good enough to keep other teams from scoring and they are wildly inconsistant. With a few players in supporting roles, they may be able to make a run in a year or two, providing Dipietro continues to improve. They have a great coach in Ted Nolan who can get the most out of his guys but they are not good enough to beat New Jersey, Ottawa, or Buffalo in a seven game series. They aren't strong enough up and down the lineup.

The most important factor in the Islanders making the finals is Ted Nolan - he's a great coach and there's not telling how far he can take this team.
I'm not an Islander fan and I'm pulling for my team to win the Cup. But if they don't get there, I hope the Islanders get it.

No.
They may not even get IN the playoffs, but IF they do, it is almost certain their FIRST opponent will be New Jersey or Buffalo, two teams that have better forwards, defenseman, and most important of all, Goaltending.
The 3 players you mentioned are nothing to sneeze at, but they are not Crosby, Iginla, Lidstrom, Pronger or Brodeur either.
Not a chance.

Making the playoffs? Yes
Making a good run? It depends on who they play. If they play the Sabres or Devils in the 1st round, they'll be one and done.

Definitely. They just acquired one of the most dominate forwards in the game. He, Chris Pronger, and some timely goal-tending took the Oilers a long way last year.
