~The doctor doesn't want to talk about natural therapy because it is not approved by the FDA.
Your girlfriend needs to take those hormones, at least very low doses, because her body is lacking these hormones.
Having menopause if very difficult without the help of hormones, you become moody, irritable and I hate to say it, but you even feel like you "hate" everything and everyone. It's not something to mess around with.
I've heard of husbands leaving their wives because of menopause.
So you see, NOT taking the medication has it's side affects too.~

I am going through exactly that and can offer you valuable information that blew me away. For me, drugs are out of the question - too many risks and side effects.
There may be a couple of reasons why doctors prefer not to discuss natural therapies:
1) They are generally not trained in this area.
2) The pharmaceutical companies are the ones who conduct/sponsor the doctors' training seminars.
You cannot patient a herb, so there is no money in it for them! Everything these days keeps coming back to the dollar.
If you would like me to forward an on-line presentation of an international research and development company that produces safe, toxin free products and how you can access these products, email me at leanne27@aapt.net.au

I've tried others but NuFem seems to be helping the most. It's natural HRT (black cohosh). You never get rid of the "tropical moments" but the frequency & the severity of them is less. It's just too bad you can't order them when you're cold.
I don't know why women can't accept that menopause is a natural state and to just deal with the symptoms & changes as they occur. I don't mean this in a disrespectful manner. I had more problems in premenopause, mostly with depression & anger but got through it with Don Quai (another herbal remedy).
I too hate the changes in my body, my skin, my hair & my weight but we have to accept them (although exercise, diet, good moisturizers & a really good hair dresser is a bonus). My doctor gave me some very good advice at the time. If you are having weight issues....get down to your ideal weight NOW before you hit actual menopause as it's much easier to lose weight beforehand then after because you gain an automatic 5 pounds almost to the day you graduate between pre & actual menopause. And it's true. I hit my 12 month mark (menopause starts when you haven't had a period in 12 months) in October & gained a horrible amount of weight between then & Christmas. It didn't help that I went on a holiday and didn't get back to the gym until I realized my clothes had shrunk while hanging in the closet.
Some women in premenopause need a little help to get over a period of depression/anxiety. I was there as well & went on a very short term of Ativan to deal with it (was dealing with the death of my father & some really crappy issues with my kid's school). I have a good friend that is dealing with the same thing right now (she's in her early 40's). She is on a short course of an anti-anxiety medication just to get her over the hump.
Show this to your friend. She needs to know that she's not alone in this and the best way to handle it is to talk to other women. Doctors like to push the drugs but more and more are accepting the natural HRT's. If you see the play "Menopause Out Loud" playing anywhere in your area - go & see it. It's hilarious and puts into perspective just what we ALL are going through. I didn't realize that everyone else was heading to the bathroom more often - I thought it was just me !!
All the best - oh and cut way back on the tea & coffee. Caffeine is our enemy !!

Doctors are not going to discuss anything with her that is not proven and well studied. And I don't know why people think that herbs are really natural. The best working ones are found to have specific compounds (drugs). And her doctor probably feels that way too. He/she isn't going to suggest something that might not make her better, and in some cases harm her.
She needs to keep her calcium intake up, eat well and exercise to feel her best during this time. Low dose estrogen therapy is one way of dealing with the symptoms. But women have been doing it another way since the beginning of time, if they lived long enough. And with you to lean on, I am sure she will pull through beautifully.

I went through all the agony your friend is experiencing. I decided after much research to go cold turkey. It was rough for a while especially the nightsweats but now everything has calmed down and I only get flashes when the temperature is 70 and above. If she can keep room temperature no higher than 65 she will notice less hot flashes, thus you get sleep, and thus you are more yourself. Having worked at FDA, I don't take any approved drugs because sometimes the risk outweight the benefits. The botanicals don't work. Soy does nothing either. At least in my experience. But try low dose estrogen if its unbearable.

Black cohosh and a vitamin containing zinc, calcium, and magnesium will help.
