The question "what is life" can mean different things to different people and in different disciplines. Would a priest, a parent, a doctor, a scientist all have the same definitions about life?
For example in a biological sense 'what is life' roughly translates to the question "what characterises the living state" and may involve the discussion of DNA, assemblage, function etc...however politically, socially, ethically, the question "what is life" may involve issues such as when the start of or what the quality of life is eg the abortion debate, severely braindamaged, or terminal patients quality and sanctity of life and the appreciation of life and other philosophical interpretations are valid but rather abstract and often biased towards the human experience of life rather than definitions of life
i prefer looking at a scientific, eg biological, or ecological definition of life because its far less anthropocentric and focuses on defining and researching and characterising all life....however even biologically definitions have grey areas, the diversity of life often proves difficult to box! and the philosophical /human aspects of the question shouldnt be ignored-
Some biological characteristics of life:
Although assembled from the same raw materials organisms are more complexly organised than non living things
All organisms are part of webs depending directly or indirectly on one another for materials and energy
Metabolic activity-acquire and use energy to stockpile tear down and build and eliminate materials
Homeostasis-controls to respond to environmental changes to maintain favourable operating conditions for the organism
A capacity for growth development and reproduction
DNA is the molecule of inheritance
All show adaptive potential and there are selection variations
But consider some of the grey areas; those things that seem to have some living characteristics and not others, eg viruses, liposomes, philosophically you could consider the earth itself to almost to be living if you look at webs, homeostatsis etc
in a physiological sense its even unclear what is required by living organisms to survive-except for water-all organisms (appear) to need water to some degree-it used to be that sunlight was on the list until deep sea vents and cave dwelling organisms were discovered that could break chemical bonds for energy and didnt need the sun, it also used to be thought that temperatures above the limit of protein denaturing couldnt support life also, but vents dashed that one too-i think 120? degrees C has been measured in water with bacterial life, to date.
Face it its one simple question one very complex answer

It is time span. Between two dots. Born date and death date are two dots. This is a vast subject. Adi Shankara not only revived the wisdom of integrated life and made it popular in his day, and also established four principal seats of learning in four corners of India to enjoy the beauty of life with pure and to ensure that it would reach the generation after generation. Gyana and Bhakti. Knowledge and devotion. I am not competent to expand further.

Yet beyond the bricks and mortar of the city, beyond the manufactured chit chat of the dinner table ,the inspired arguments of politic es, the pursuit after women, society and "the thing:there lies the big wide world with its dream, its excitement , its wast distances ,its wide music ,its silence, Ti's laughter, and its tears, To find it how ever . you must renounce all those blind alleys of existence. You have to got to forget appearances and the judgement of tho use who live in next door. the world is deep and wide . that each man is as good as another until he has proved himself inferior.and that life is fleeting, and there is so much to see and do.
