WoW- if we have created a character and played with it and we change the server should we create a new player?

after creating the character first should a new one be created on changing the server or realm??
(wat is REALM by the way??)

You can transfer the character for a fee, but I wouldn't do it for a character that is not that well developed. Besides, you can always create the same type of character and I believe even use the same name on different servers.
