As Steve has said, it all depends on what type of business you want to start........
Judging by the broadness of you question i'm guessing your actually looking for ideas on what type of business's you can start online so i'll give you some ideas that i know of. I'd recommend focussing on 1-3 of these ideas so that you have Multiple sources of Income.
"Paid to Surf" sites like AGLOCO
Selling on eBay
Selling for other people on eBay
Paid Survey Sites
Data Entry
Mystery Shopper
Freelancing on sites like elance, this might include writing, web design, graphic design
Share Trading
Writing and selling your own e-books and reports
affiliate sites,
Blogging and advertising on it
Squidoo Lens's
Making money of advertising on Youtube (available soon apparently)
Multi Level Marketing Sites
Online Journalism for News sites
Blogging and advertising on it
I hope some of these ideas can help you out, No matter what type of business you want to start it will be hard work and don't be discouraged if it's slow to start up, this is normal.

Do you want the answer that question deserves? Go online and start it.
If you want a better answer, you are going to have to be more specific. Do you have a business plan? Do you have the required equipment to start the business? Do you have enough money? How will you market your business? Have you done income/loss forecasts? Who will be doing your accounting? Do you have a product/service picked out?
As you can see, there are a lot of things to sort out if you are starting a business.
