GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. It means the time at Greenwich, just outside London, England. It is the site of the prime meridian, which is a line of longitude passing through Greenwich which is deemed to be zero degrees (and, therefore, the line of longitude on which all other lines are based).
GMT dates back to the mid 1800s when England was the dominant world power and GMT was seen as the time zone by which all other time zones where measured.
