We French our very proud of our history. During WW2 we were able to repostion to the rear so fast that it through the whole German offensive into disarray. Rommel was runnig around like an idiot saying were is the French Army, where is the french army? We fooled him, and we fooled all of them. We invented the Geurilla tatic that we used against them we only pretended to surrender, we had our fingers crossed. You see we have been conquered by the Germans before, it was not the first time. Normally they come down drink a little wine, watch a few plays, get some culture then they go home to their beer and sauages.
The German is not match for the French Soldier, we have proven that many times. The German can not drink wine, they fall down like little baby.

Sincerely it's an interetsing question.
For sure, defeat is always a humiliation, and collaboration of Vichy is a shame.
As a French, I'd wonder : "what would I do if I was Here by this time". Don't know in fact, we were'nt strong enough, and politics didn't do the jobs to invest in technology, good planes, good infantry.
It's a mistake, a Socialist mistake I'd say...
In an other way, Paris were not bombed, Jazz were on the top, Art and Culture managed to be the ultime way of expressing the voice of people...
It's like that, I think it's political, and without irony, if you're American or British, you should wonder about humiliation, defeat...
Do your job to stop this ******* war, and make peace with Muslims (which include a lot of work, I reckon)
For sure it's the better way.

I happen to live down the road, so to speak, and they seem to have got over it pretty well.
First - the defeat and occupation of France were not like what a similar fate would have been for Britain or America. France was a deeply divided society and a large section preferred the Germans to their own left wing.
Second - after the war, with the founding of the EEC, later EU, the Franco-German partnership was and is the keystone of the whole structure. The German horse pulls it with the French coachman sitting on top, as De Gaulle used to say. It's no love match, but a marriage of convenience that works.
As for the 'be glad' business - Voltaire? Napoleon? Louis XIV? Isn't there enough to be proud of? What about Vietnam? Iraq? Suez? Northern Ireland? If you are proud of your history, these things will be just dips in the road.

Yes, the French will.
Will the Americans ever recognize the help the French gave them to achieve their War of Independence?
Will the Americans admit they were not able to do what the French could not in Indochina (that's Vietnam) either?
Be glad that you are not completely ignorant of history, and you can take pride in it too.

Will Germany ever get over its humiliating defeat and post war occupation by the allies?
France had many military victories of its own-notably under Napoleon amongst others and has every reason to be proud.of its past-not just in a military capacity but also from its art, culture and its contribution to medicine.

In the relatively short span of 150 years France has moved from world conquer, to exploitative colonial power, to humiliating defeat, to economic ruin, to social dysfunction. It is very hard to be proud and optimistic given that trend.

No I don't think that they will. Go to Google's main page, and type in "french military victories." Then click *I'm feeling lucky*
Then you'll see.
