Took the access panel off to the wiring/burner mechanism and there is a black soot on the inside of the casing. Any ideas on what is going on with this thing and what the general repair would be?

Yes, I have shut it off and yes, I do know that gas leaks are serious, I actually work for the gas company, but NO we dont do furnace repairs. It's a propane furnace, about 16 years old and filters are clean.

Could be your furnace is running too rich. Too much gas and not enough air. Call a service technician and have it cleaned and checked out. Either that or the soot could be the wiring burning or some other electrical component.
Get it checked out immediately.

It sounds like you may have a blockage, that or you have a very old furnace and it's working to hard. I would suggest having a professional look at it, and decide what to do from there.

What did your furnace eat last night. I once took my furnace out for Mexican food and I had the same problem. Try Tums. That seemed to settle my furnace down so the odor stopped. I'll tell you, I am never taking my furnace out for Mexican food again!!!

I've had this happen before. I would replace the filter if you haven't done that already, and make sure nothing is blocking any large vents.
