An inquisition is an investagation, refering to the word inquest. enquire, etc. From the latin word inquisitio.
I imagaine that you rare refering to one of the "inquisitions" in where an ecclesiastical tribunal was held to validate or invalidate an accusation of hearsy.
The Roman Catholic Church has conducted several inquisition in several countires through out it's history. The inquisition was mostly used and misused for financial or political gain. The Knights Templar were accused of Hearsy and hunted down. Manily for the threat that they posed the Church. Even Kings & Queens have been accused, Joan of Arc for one was accused and convicted in and inquisition.
The Inquisition has a very bloody and dishonorable history.

The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and was under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy. It was not definitively abolished until 1834, during the reign of Isabel II.
