Thats ridiculous.
If you were born in Africa or are from Africa, you are African.
Just because the public is made 'so aware' and 'so sensitized' to the history of 'black skinned' Africans, that does not mean that any non-black skinned people cannot also be African.
Look at America; we have every color and creed and if they were born here or made legal citizens, they are Americans.
Whoever said that to you is playing the 'race card'.

Mate if you were born there you're African!

But it's funny you should bring this up because for many black people to be African is not just Location specific - The word african seems to hold a lot of meanings other than location. So you were probably talking to a person who'd taken on another meaning to the word African. You should have asked them why they viewed you that way. You would have gotten a better answer than we could give you. Anyhow...

Just like many meanings are attached to the words like England, Scotland, Italy, Australia - For many people there is more to being part of a country other than just being born there!

You are by Nationality, from the Country that you originate (except in the case of you taking up citizenship elsewhere.

If you were born in Africa, you're African (unless of course New Labour have changed those rules too, at great expense to the tax payer).

Anyone of African decent is African. Even if someone wasn't born in Italy (mob cough cough) they still say that they are Italian.

DUH.

I would say whoever told you that is not very well-informed. You don't have to be black to be African any more than someone has to be white to be say-Australian. Color has nothing to do with nationality.

Many people in Northern Africa (Egypt, Morocco) don't have black skin (they are "brown"), and are African. There are many people in South Africa who were descendants from Europe (Belgian Congo -- Ethiopia, for instance), are white, and are African.
Don't fall prey to the silly stereotypes that everyone in Africa is black, everyone in Europe is white, everyone in the Middle East is brown...
