Artificial polymers (man-made plastics) tend to be versatile and relatively inexpensive. As a raw material, they tend to be very easy to shape. There are also inorganic polymers include silicones and polyphosphazenes, that have no natural materials that have similar properties.

Natural polymers include DNA, RNA, proteins (including enzymes), starches, cellulose, chitin, shellac and natural rubber.
