Why do headphones sound like music is inside your head?

In the world there are cues that our ears pick up to allow us to place a sound in 3D space. headphones don't allow some of these cues and hence our natural system places these sounds inside the head in error.

because the headphones project the music inside your ear, and since your ears are connected to your head... well, you get the point.
