The reason i'm asking is because i keep looking at some pickups for sale with diesel motors in them with over 100k+ miles on them and still selling for big bucks!! How many miles is considered "a lot" for a diesel engine??

These are all good answers.I guess i never really thought of the bigger picture if a vehicle was over 100k miles on it.No doubt that some of the other drivetrain may be bad after all those miles and not just worrying about the engine alone.Thanks to everyone.I will let this question go up for a vote.Thanx.

100,000 isn't that much for a diesel...typically they get around 300,000...but that isn't the only reason to consider NOT buying a truck with that many miles... things will need to be replaced...brakes, exhaust, clutch, shocks, ball joints...just because the engine runs strong doesn't mean it's a dependable truck..

the cummins in pickups is one of the better engines. You should be able to get 750,000 out it b4 rebuilding the head. Depending on the rear end in the truck I know of some that get nearly 30mpg. I know the Izzu diesel is a good one as is the toyota and nissan. If you're looking at a car, the VW has a good one.
Generally a deisel requires less maintenance than a gasoline engine.

In my opinion any thing over 160k is alot of miles. I am not saying it makes the engine old. it is the resr of the vehicle you must be wary of. many newer diesel engines can go for hundreds of thousands of miles. Hell, I know someone who has 450k on a cummins, but he has put 3 transmissions behind it and 2 differentials.If you really want a diesel be very cautious. most of the trucks that have over 100k are out of warranty, which is why many people get rid of them.

I don't know what a lot of mileage is for a diesel engine but I know that they last a lot longer than a gas engine given proper care.
Some would say that 100K miles is just broken in.

the general rule on all engines is these days is prior owners etc maitnance and has it done any 4wd deisel can allso give you exspensive service cost on all parts as well 200,000 klms is fair to say thats to much as parts are due to be replaced allso take a tip on the warranty dealers give when there new like 135,000 parts and replacement etc that give you an idear on manufactureing replacement time estamates so in the case of 200,000 maybe its time for another look around!!!hope you find one regards dave!!!

250k-300k miles is the most I've ever heard of.
