When you go and legally change your name using your marriage certificate. There are a lot of women who don't change their names when they get married! If it just took the marriage certificate, it would be ridiculous because we wouldn't have a choice about changing our names!

Contrary to popular belief, your name doesn't change just becuase you sign your marriage certificate. You have to legally change your name on your social security card. Then you have to get a new drivers liscense with your new last name and preferrably update your banking accounts and credit cards to reflect the change as well. It's pretty much a hassle, but if all these steps are not taken, you can run into some legally trouble. You can however keep your maiden name and not change anything legally. You will just have sign all financial and legal documents with your maiden name.

Been Married Twice-Divorced Twice and the name change does not happen when you get married. its an option that you have. there are several women that don't want to change there names. You will have to change it at the SS office. You will have to take the marriage certificate to the social security office to show proof of the marriage. they will then send you a new card with your new last name. you can also do this by mail but if you do that then you have to mail in your original marriage certificate to them and they will send it back. they will not accept copies.

It is OFFICIALLY changed when you sign the certificate. It is LEGALLY changed when you change your Social Security Card and Driver's License. You don't have to change it though.

After you sign the marriage certificate. You still have to contact Social Security and DMV as well as any accounts your name is on and provide them with legal documentation of your name change. Congratulations!
