I live in an area of flat, open carse land. When the wind is strong it causes a whistling noise around the telephone wires. The telephone wires join the house just outside the bedroom, and the whistling is converted to a loud humming noise when heard indoors. This can go on all night and is becoming obtrusive to a good nights sleep. Can this noise be stopped in anyway without having to get the telephone wires moved? Even earplugs do not help!

You need to stop the vibration that the wind causes thus creating the noise. I would get some discs about 2"-3" diameter (plastic discs like you get as coasters) make a small hole, thread and tie some string about 12" long through the hole on one and then at the other end of the string tie a second disc. Throw these over each lines at different places along their length. Once in place the weight and wind resistance of the discs will change the frequency of the vibration in the wire and hopefully give you some peace.

Call the phone company and see if they can come out and take some of the slack out of the line. Make the appointment on Saturday so you can be there. Have some 1/2 inch rubber washers for when the guy comes out. While he is there ask him if he can put the washers under the screw that holds the goat hook to your house. This should also help avoid the noises cause by the vibration. Explain to the guy what is going on, he should be able to help you. You probably don't want to do this yourself. The strand between your house and the pole is probably under tension and could throw you off balance if your not prepared for it when you take it off the house. Most phone techs should be more than understanding. (Ive been in the business over 25 yrs. ) Good Luck.

See if the phone company will bury the wires across you back yard. They may charge you a fee, but at least you'll be able to sleep. Around here, all new developments have buried telephone wires.
