i am not sure about the advantages but the feds frown on people having the wrong name on their social security cards after 9-11 things that were not a big deal before have become a big deal now and remember if you are working the money that the social security takes from your paycheck is going in under the name on your card and if for some reason you have to file for diability thats the name the money will be in and its very hard to file with no name cofusion i cant even think about the mess it would be with 2 names

If you decide to keep your maiden name then nothing, if you change all your other documents over to your married name and not your social security card, then your major id won't match. It'll be confusing when it comes time to file your taxes.

I've been married for almost 8 years and I've never changed my social security card and I've never had any kind of problems.

Disadvantage...If you don't change it, you will have to go through your whole life explaining that you are really married to everybody, people will be confused how to sign your holiday card and your children will have a different last name and everyone will want to know if the kids are from his first marriage.
The advantages? ummmmmm I don't know

You just need to use the name on your card when filling out anything that includes your social security number. The process really doesnt take that long...?

My wife hasn't changed her last name officially yet, because she was going through Social Security disability at the time and didn't want any of the paperwork to get confused. You don't have to take your husbands last name. It's totally up to you. My wife is eventually going to take my name. It just involves paperwork.

For me the advantage is when my divorce (annulment) becomes final, I don't have to go to SSA again to change paperwork and get ANOTHER new SS card.
