Scientific research.We lack the technology to send a manned space ship to Mars let alone bring it back. Sense most of the space probes are on one way trips, I doubt that they could get many volunteers for the journey.

To avoid loss of life.
The life of man (in fact, all the creatures) is so precious, and it is risky. In physiological terms like heat, moisture, etc. and in psychological terms like stress, amnesia, etc.
When the technology is so advanced that we can delegate such risky works to robots and machines, why take risk parting our families and the dearest earth!
