Tagged stamps have a coating, almost invisible in normal light, that glows under UV light. The machines that put the envelopes into the proper position for the stamp to be canceled use tagging to "find" the stamp. Lower value stamps in the US are not tagged to prevent them from being used to mail letters with insufficient postage, as most of the time nobody actually visually checks that a letter with a stamp on it has correct postage until the carrier glances at it as s/he's delivering the letter.

Counterfeit stamps are often detected because they lack tagging, so the machines reject them as not having a stamp.

I've never heard those terms... perhaps you mean Canceled or Uncanceled ?

A canceled stamp is one that has received a postmark, therefor making it unable to be used again. Then there is a MINT stamp... one that is uncanceled and unused.

I've been away from collecting since the 1980's... how does the hobby deal with this darned peel-and-stick stamps ?
