To start with senior people get far less sleep than younger ones. Sleeplessness is a symptom that grows with age. Add to that ingrained habits: years of self-discipline during which people get accustomed to getting up early to go to work, so they do not kick the habit when they retire. Finally you have to remember that people of that generation were not brought up to mollycoddle themselves, and idling in bed, even if they had the opportunity, was considered lazy and wasteful.
I think many senior citizens stick to a strict routine to structure their day and putting the dustbin out first thing in the morning, or walking to the newsagent to get a daily paper, becomes a discipline, like going shopping on Friday mornings to avoid the family crowds, or doing certain things at certain times so as not to forget doing them altogether.

I think I may know how you feel! Like you, I work full time and so does my husband and getting out of bed in the mornings is a real struggle. Don't you just hate that alarm clock?!
Unless you are lucky enough to be able to work at something you absolutely love and it gives you the energy to spring out of bed in the morning eager to get your day underway - then I think how you are and how we are is how it is for most people. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy enough in my work - but not in the way I've just described.
Retired folk, bless 'em, have the luxury of choice. Plus they possibly feel they want to cram as much as possible in to each day because they don't know what's round the corner. Well, I know none of us does but you know what I mean.
I am still constantly amazed at my Dad, though - 81 going on 50 - bags of energy (despite having had a stroke a few years ago), he cycles, he gardens, he seems to always be doing something - and he gets up at six every morning!!!

Yes I know, it's a big mystery. I leave for work every day at 7.30am and I always see the same old man going to the newsagents to get his papers, whether it rain, shine or even snow. I also come across the same old lady sweeping her broom outside her house at 7.36 each morning.Weird!

Most older people need less sleep than younger adults. My 73-year-old father needs only about five hours per night. You'll probably be the same way when you make it to that age!

I think all previous answers maybe part of the explanation but I do know that as you get older your body doesn't require as much sleep to repair and regenerate your body. Maybe that's why we get old?? Maybe, one day, if scientists can get the human body to still require all that sleep they may find the key to extending our lifespan!!!!!!!! woohoo! I smoke lots of weed so I need a crane to get me out of bed for work and no encouragement to return either!lol Maybe I might live to 200 if I keep up my weed smoking! And they say "SMOKING KILLS" huh!!

After accustoming yourself to waking early.some of them for as long as 30years,sleeping can no longer be left in their feeble bodies.Old habits die hard and you can not teach an old dog new tricks.
