calculate the amount of heat generated by 100 joule of work done on water in a container

If the work is all done in a form of a heat exchanging, you already got it as 100 J. Otherwise, e.g. part of it is used to raise the elevation in a gravity, you need to specify more.

Maybe you meant to find the temperature change? Then you need to specify the amount of water.

4.184 J of heat will increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C

100 J ÷ 4.184 = 23.9 °C/gram
