Who would you like to see when the White House in 2008 and why?
my top 5 would be Lincoln, FDR, Jefferson, Wilson And Eisenhower. The worst would be Bush, Johnson, Hoover, Nixon, and i can't think of a fifth. I just think that the top 5 believed in what America's founding fathers wrote and saw being president as more than just a position of power and a way to benefit good friends and financial supporters.

I know I wasn't alive during most of their presidencies but the historical accounts for what they did for the nation stand alone as why they would be the best. What will Bush's legacy be?

This question comes up quite often and it is interesting as the answers reflect the slant given to education. Of course the answers should be based on some foundation from which to make such judgments. For me that would be their relevance to Founders’ intent and any such list (here) will be too short as being without sufficient explanation:

The worse would be as follows:

President John Adams [4 March 1797 to 3 March 1801]
His appointment of the “Midnight Judges” 3 March 1801. This establish the direction of the country toward a strong federal government that would eventually become extra-constitutional in its actions.
His use of the Alien and Sedition Acts which were outside of his Constitutionally delegated powers. (such as deported individuals without due process).
Appointed John Marshall to the supreme court thereby setting up the court to makes its infamous ruling in the McCulloch v. Maryland case [1819].

President Jackson [4 March 1829 to 3 March 1837]
Threaten to use federal troops to force South Carolina to reverse its act of making the federal tariff acts null and void.
Rejected Supreme court’s decision that the federal government must protect the Indians.
Allowed the Indian “Trail of Tears.”
Used the raw power of the federal government to build roads in State land which was outside of Constitutional powers.

President Abraham Lincoln [4 March 1861 to 15 April 1865]
Promoted a war with the Confederacy which never should have occurred.
Disregarded the Constitution by such things as not recognizing the right of States to secede, with drawing habeas corpus, jailing northern politicians without due process for speaking out against the war.
Authorizing General Sherman to attack the civilians of the South to break the spirite of the Confederacy.
For instituting an unconstitutional income tax.

President Woodrow Wilson [4 March 1913 to 3 March 1921]
Getting the United States into a war in which there was no reason to enter.
Initiating the current income tax.
Reestablishing the central bank.

President Franklin Roosevelt [4 March 1933 to 12 April 1945]
Taking credit for plans conceive and developed during the Hoover administration.
Not acting to prepare the United States navy for a possible attack in the pacific.
Staying in office more than two terms breaking the precedent first established by George Washington.
Allowing the Russians to control Eastern Europe at the end of World War II and laying the foundation for what would become the Cold War.
Moving the country far down the road to strong central government and socialism.

The five best Presidents are more difficult to select:

President George Washington [30 April 1789 to 3 March 1797]
Refusing to accept the position of King.
Establishing the concept of a president holding office for no more than 2 terms.
Acting as the focal point for the new union to see itself as a republic comprised of sovereign republics.

President Thomas Jefferson [4 March 1801 to 3 March 1809]
Resisting as long as possible the formation of factions (what would later become strong political parties) to gain power over State representation.
Writing of the Kentucky Resolution which in part, recognized the power of the States as sovereign entities which could nullify federal acts and secede from the union.
His work (along with other Founders) develop from English Common Law the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation the 1783 Treaty of Peace, the Constitution (yes he was not a delegate but he influenced those who were delegates), and the Kentucky Resolution.

President James Madison [4 March 1809 to 3 March 1817]
Along with oth4er such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, and Patrick Henry, the creation of the Union.
His work (along with other Founders) develop from English Common Law the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation the 1783 Treaty of Peace, the Constitution (yes he was not a delegate but he influenced those who were delegates), and the Virginia Resolution.

President Herbert Hoover [4March 1929 to 3 March 1933]
He is likely the most intelligent individual to serve as President.
He is likely the most misunderstood president of all time. He didn’t cause the depression. In fact many of the fundamental programs initiated by FDR (at least those that were constitutional) were developed by the Hoover administration. Unlike Roosevelt he already had a great deal of experience assisting populations in troubled times as he did in Europe during the years just after World War II. Unlike FDR he actually succeeded and didn’t need a war to rebuild the economy.
In addition his wife (Lou Henry Hoover) was his equal. She was the one who actual began a form of fireside chats over radio and she also is the one who first desegregated the White House.
The 1929 Agricultural Act Establishing the Farm Board.
1930 authorized the Grain Stabilization Board.
1930 Created the Veterans Administration.
1931 laid the keel for the first American Aircraft Carrier (the Ranger).
1932 Reconstruction Finance Corporation created.

President Harry S. Truman [12 April 1945 to 20 January 1953]
Made the very difficult (but correct) decision to use nuclear weapons to end the war in the Pacific 92 September 1945).
7 May 1945 saw the end of the war in Europe.
26 June 1945 United Nations Charter signed at San Francisco.
Philippine Republic established.
Atomic Energy Commission created.
Truman did many acts to bring the world toward normalcy post World War II.

Ah yes, who would I like to see in the White House in 2008? James Madison because he would have the intellect to deal with current situations and he would understand Founders' True Intent and thereby move us back to Founders' concepts and out of a socialist government.

Of the current politicians there is only one, Congressman Ron Paul from Texas who comes the closest to a Madison Ideal.
