GIVEN
students tickets= x
outsiders tickets= y
AND
x + y = 640
10x + 25y = 12400

Solving the riddle!
x + y = 640....subtract y from both sides
x = 640 - y ....and then we substitute in the other equation

10(640-y) + 25 y = 12400
6400 - 10y + 25y = 12400.....sub 6400 both sides
- 10y + 25y = 6000....combine
15y = 6000....divide by 15
y = 400

x + y = 640....substitute
x + 400 = 640....sub 400 both sides
x = 240

240 x 10 = 2400
400 x 25 = 10000

2400 + 10000 = 12400

we did it !

x - ticket for students
y - tickets for outsiders

x + y = 640 --------(1)
10x + 25y = 12400 --------(2)

(1) * 10 = 10x + 10y = 6400 -----(3)

solving (2) & (3)

10x + 25y = 12400
10x + 10y = 6400
----------------------------
15y = 6000
-------------------------
y = 6000/15
y = 400
sub y in (1)

x + 400 = 640
x = 240
