Your tappets are hydraulic self adjusting changing the distributor cap would have no effect. The most likley problem is that your cam shafts are worn this is a common problem with 325i beemers. This is an expensive job you can remove your cam covers and check for wear on the shafts .If worn the lobe of the cam will appear flattened that is the point of the cam .Mick UK work on them.

hi there firstly give the engine an oil change and make sure you use the best quality and right grade of oil for your car you can buy stuff to pour in to loosen sticky tappets if after this it is still noisy then it sounds as though your cam lobes could be worn so replace cam and tappets, your engine will be fine to run like it is but could be losing compression therefore you wont be getting max performance i hope this helps you a bit

You don't give the mileage, but an E30 is at least 13 years old. These BMW sixes do get a bit clattery from 100k & I suspect yours has done more than that. Your best bet is a complete recon cylinder head from somewhere like Europarts, but it won't be cheap (£500 plus fitting) If the rest of the car is in good nick, it's probably worth doing, as these old Beemers are poised at the edge of classic-ness.

The tappets need adjusting. Has nothing to do with the dizzy cap. Get your mechanic to adjust them.
