Hi guys,
I was reading through the discus food recipe and come across with some ingredients that I don’t know about.
- Astaxantin, -Spirulina, - Lecithin.
What are these?
How much should be added to the food?
Where can I buy them from? ( can I get them from the chemist?)

Astaxantin is an anti oxidant rich oil found in many types of fish
Spirulina is a type of algae common in fish foods
Lecithin is an emulsifier that allows oils and water based materials to mix well, very common in commercial baked good for humans.

The only sources for the first and second would be from commercial baking supply or vitamin making companies. Very expensive and really unneeded. Skip this recipe and find another I would say.

One of the primary factors in keeping your discus fish healthy is feeding them properly. In my opinion feeding your discus the regular tropical fish flakes isn't enough, I would even recommend not feeding them those flakes at all.

The only dryfood I use, when I run out of stock from my freezer, is special discus granulate. But even this 'special' discus food should not be the main food for discus fish. It is also important to feed your discus several times a day, best with different types of food. All the food I use for my discus fish, and for the other species as well, are frozen blister packages. Be sure to let them defrost before feeding them.

I give my discus Bloodworms, they like those a lot, artemia, beef heart and daphnia, and occasionally white and black mosquito larvae.

Beefheart, which is a wholesome meal for all Discus, can be even made at home. I grind the beefheart very fine (or food processor) then spread it out on baking sheet and freeze, after freezing you can break into desired pieces and put into freezer storage container.

its a surfactant found in soy and eggs, and commercially available at pharmacies. Soy oils contains it. I also recommend you find a better recipe though, maybe something described in common terms.
