To get the 4 as the power, you need to use the superscript formatting option.

The icon is on the formatting toolbar (the one with all the font and text size and all that). It looks like x to the power of 2.

If it's not actually there, then go to
View
>Toolbars
>Customise
Select the Commands tab and then the Format option in Categories scroll list. When you click that, the Commands in the column next to it should have options like Font, Font size and suchlike come up. Scroll down on that list, and there should be a 'Superscript' option. Click and drag the Superscript option onto your toolbars at the top.

To type the 10 to the power of 4, type the 10 normally, then click on the superscript icon. Then type the 4. The 4 should come up little and up the top. That should do it. But don't forget to click the Superscript option again to turn it off when you don't want to use it anymore.

If that didn't help, just use the Microsoft Word Help and seach Superscript. It should come up with something
