I drive a 98 Ford Escort. Currently, it drives VERY loudly. When I am pressing on the gas, it almost sounds like a motorcycle. But only when I am pressing on the gas. Is that my muffler or something else? And, if it is my muffler, how much will it cost to fix on average?

Definitely there is something in the exhaust system that is defective. It could be the catalytic converter, the muffler, or a pipe.
If you can't get under the car to check yourself, go to any muffler shop for an estimate.

Doodles,

It could be as simple as a gasket from the header that is connected to the engine where it attaches to the header pipe or at any connection along the exhaust system. Or the muffler.

You sound like you are not familiar with cars...if thats the case take a friend with you to a muffler shop. It might help you from being taken for a financial ride.

it could be your exhaust pipe that has a hole in it.
you can check your muffler by haveing someone press on the gas while you look at the muffler. if the sound comes from there its the muffler,if not it is most likely your pipe.

the cost varies
