Check this site out, http://www.firsttankguide.net/betta.php

Its all the basics you need to know to properly care for a betta, read it over and see if you did something wrong and fix that and give it a try again. If you did all that stuff then maybe the fish were sick when you got them and try and different store next time.

Are you adding tap water to the bowls? Any sudden water change? Fish are sensitive and easy to harm by upsetting the balance of the water. Where are you buying them from? Some times fish bought from your standard pet stores are not in that great of health to start with.

did you dechlorinate the water before you put the fish in it?
what temperature was the water and how did you acclimatise the fish to it?

if you didn't dechlor the water and just dumped the fish straight in from his bag/cup, the sudden shock of chlorinated water (poisonous) and cold would have been too much for the poor little fish to bare.

Beta don't live all that long anyways. Check them out, if they have little white spots, it's ick. This can be treated. I just had a beta die from ick.
