Isn't the desire of a group of people who share the same culture and similiar beliefs to be independent a good thing? Whats wrong with the aspiration to be united?

The world is getting to be a little too large and diverse to be thinking in those terms. Strife is the only possible outcome of such thinking.

It can create a "Them and Us" scenario, turning people against one another. Some people living within a Nationalist area can become intolerant and unwelcoming towards outsiders.
I agree with other answerers who say that it can sometimes give rise to fanaticism.

That's a utopian ideal of nationalism. In practice, nationalism has very little to do with the harmonising of one society, but more to do with the segregation of others.

because most of the times it leads to fanaticism. actually it was really the cause of all wold wars
