direct x is a driver form microsoft that enables 3d accelerated graphics in games
there are 2 main types of graphic interface in todays p.c,s...a.g.p(accelerated graphics port) and p.c.i-express
for a optimal gaming experience you should be looking at a card with
1.256mb of video memory
2.pci-express(recommended)or a.g.p
3.pixel and shader model 3.0
4.8 or more pixel pipelines
5.open gl2.0
as i dont know which graphic interface you have i am going to recommend two of each type, one budget and one around £100-£150
so here we go,for the agp type of interface the budget card i recommend is the nvidia geforce 6600gt(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=150992),for the price this is a absolute bargain and apart from only having 128mb of memory, this has all the specs i mentioned
for the agp high end card i would go for the radeon x1950pro(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=521950),this is the fastest agp card avalible and has a whopping 36 pixel pipelines and 512mb of memory
for the budget pci-express choice i would recommend the nvidia geforce 7300gt(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=454110),this has all the nessecary specs including 256mb of video memory,at the price its a real bargain
the high end pci-express choice goes to the nvidia geforce 8800gts,this is a new breed of cards that have direct x 10 comaptibility and instead of having pixel pipelines it uses stream processes,if you can afford this card you will have a card that will eat up any game you throw at it,this card is a powerhouse
once you have these cards you then need drivers, for the nvidia drivers go to http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp,and for a.t.i(radeon) go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
finally you will need the latest direct x runtime download, you can download this from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx
the game you have bought will run with any of the cards i have recommended, however the better the card the more special effects you can add,but they will run fine with any
i hope this has helped
good luck

Any omdern graphics card will support DirectX 9.0c, but given that Vista will bring us DirectX 10, and this in turn will bring about a whole new generation of graphics cards, I would stay my hand a little while. Plus ATI are due to release a new set of chipsets which, allegedly, will blow the curren NVidia cards out of the water again, and will certainly start a price war, the main benefactors being us, the consumers!
Bide your time, grab a bargain!

it is going to in no way artwork with DX 11. you will get a ATI 5000 sequence card yet i could wait. DX 11 could desire to start to get enormous with in 6months. desire totally by utilising then Nvidia could have released there new DX 11 enjoying cards. If i positioned on you i could in simple terms wait untill nvidia releases there enjoying cards. they are going to be extra value-effective than the ATI enjoying cards and extra suited. How do i be responsive to this? they could desire to be extra suited than the competition. Nvidia did so nicely with the 8 sequence and the two hundred sequence that they could desire to have a crap ton of money in simple terms sitting around. so which you be responsive to that they are going to use that funds to construct a gift day card. you may desire to easily wait. Untill then in simple terms get a 8600gt or a 9600gt you will get a 8600gt for 50bucks and it will play any recreation at severe medium settings. The 9600gt is in basic terms somewhat extra suited yet its a $70 card.

I ASSUME YOU ARE USING A MOTHERBOARD WITH AN AGP GRAPHICS PORT?? YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT ATLEAST A NVIDIA 6600 FOR AROUND £80, I HAVE A MORE ADVANCED 7800GS WHICH COST ME £180 SECOND HAND, BUT IT PLAYS ANYTHING AT THE MOMENT AT HIGH RES ASWEL. BUT THE FUTURE OF GRAPHICS IS PCI-EXPRESS AND SLI( TWO GRAPHICS CARDS ON THE SAME MOTHER BOARD)

anything higher than nvidia geforce 5 or radeon 9000 series would have directx 9
But on the other hand, if you would buy a sucky card, the quality and performance in the game will go down really bad.
So it all depends on how much money you wanna spend, what type of slot you got on your motherboard and wich kind of card you want.
if your a low-end card user (LOW QUALITY THAT WOULD SUCK ON TOM RAIDER LEGENDS)
then get a 5200-5500-6200-6500-7300 from nividia or 9250-9500-x300-x600-x1300-x1300pro from ATI
All those would cost 20 to 100$ at stores
And 10 to 50$ on ebay or second hand stores
If your looking for high-end or mid-end (GOOD QUALITY THE ONE THAT WOULD BLOW YOU AWAY EXCEPT FOR THE MID END THAT ONE WOULDNT BLOW YOU AWAY BUT IT WOULD STILL HAVE GOOD QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE)
5700-5900-5950-6600-6800-7600-7800-7900-7950 from nvidia
9600-9700-9800-x800-x850-x1650-x1800-x1900-x1950 from ati
Or you can wait till may or april for the nivida geforce 8 family and ati x2k
Good luck!
