I bet there are a lot of theories about this. Here is mine, borrowed from the philosophy of Joseph Campbell, the comparative mythologist. He claimed that through his readings of sacred texts, he came up with the conclusion that most cultures ultimately view the most important aspect of life as experiencing life, not understanding life. Since so many of us live in our little domesticated cocoons--and don't have much of a life to experience--we turn to reality shows to experience life vicariously. Whether this is good or bad is another question, but that to me, is the reason.

The stuggles that occur on the various incarnantions of Survivor are more clear cut and direct (read simpler) than what we face in the everyday world.

Friends and enemies are more clear, but in the back of one's head is thought that you are safe, nobody really is going to get hurt (at least badly).

Lastly you project yourself into the situations, thining how you would do, or could you get the cute guy/girl (and there is always one of them on every team),

Hope this helps.
