It now has Windows XP , and also Windows Professional . This tower was working fine when my mother got it , but now it takes forever to just boot into Windows , just so she can play games offline. There seems to be a problem with the picture , as sometimes it is not there , and other times it is barely visible..... and we have tried several dif. monitors , one of them being very new , so we know it is not the monitor. My mother's previous computer has had problems with viruses in the past , and she did not have any protection .I was wondering if there might be a hardware problem that is causing some of this , if not all of it, and I'd like to know if anyone could help us with this?

First off, Windows NT and Windows 98 are DIFFERENT!
If it had EITHER of these originally, it was of an age that upgrading to Windows XP (Home or Pro) was inappropriate without some significant hardware upgrades as well... Notably: faster CPU, more RAM, better graphics and more storage!

That said, if it worked, but getting slower, it may very well have a virus or some other malware infecting it and slowing it down...

See the site(s) below for a quick "cookbook" of free software to get it running again!

homestead windows 7 suited, nicely. nicely.. congrats, it delivers the two 32-bit & sixty 4-bit accessibility based upon the RAM. One could desire to h've a minimum of 4GB of RAM to get the sixty 4-bit ongoing, so extra suited meet enhancements for the RAM otherwise no longer something can help or perhaps is of little need, no count what processor, portraits, OS, storage etc you install and could have. when you consider that, you're utilising Win-7-suited, there could be a loose improve to Win-8.a million for modern consumers, i assume later this twelve months and have self assurance me Win-8 harnesses the smoothness out of u'r gadget. the foremost to u'r answer could be upgrading u'r RAM. and remember the consistent updates with the aid of information superhighway.

I had to revise my comment. I though I read win98.

Anyhow,
Sounds like some hardware is going bad.
Could be a virus?
Not being able to see the screen could mean the video card has gone bad.

My suggestion. It’s time for a new computer
