don't get a taxi. if you are international come outside and walk waaaay to the right .. if you are united/southwest (or any other 'Terminal 1'), just come outside baggage claim. straight across, and a little to the right is a 'shuttle on demand' kiosk .. if you have trouble finding it, just ask any airport employee or outside porter for 'shuttle on demand'.

they have fixed prices for the various cities from OAK, although you might have to wait a bit .. you shouldn't have to wait for more than 30 minutes. i think OAK - Berkeley is maybe $26-30 .. call it $35-$40 with tip. while you are waiting, they are waiting/hoping for more customers - they will take you to your address for the prescribed fixed charge and expect a $5-10 dollar tip - not 'required' but very bad form to not tip .. that's mostly how they make their living.

lots cheaper than a cab although you won't get to your destination quite as fast as a cab.

Go with the guy above. For comparison, I life 1/2 mile due west of the airport (directly under the end of 27 left on the north field) and there's a short cut across the airfield (Ron Cowan Parkway). A taxi to my house takes under five minutes and costs about $14. Berkeley is about 5 times the distance. Use the shuttle!
