I can connect a USB memory stick and camera and they work fine but for some reason when I connect a USB HDD, even though its the internal light comes on, windows does not recognise it. I know the HDD and cables all work, so I assume it must be something to do with the USB port or maybe drivers? Any advice would be appreciated.

xp comes pre-installed with a lot of drivers for various peripherals. If XP doesn't recognize something you plugged in more than likely you don't have the driver already installed, you should have drivers that came with whatever you bought though. install them and you will be good to go!

this is because windows is trying to assign the usb item a drive letter that it's already assigned to something else. 90 seconds to resolve:

- rclick 'my computer', goto manage
- click 'disk management' on the left pane
- scroll down the items on the right-side lower pane until you see your external drive - match it up by drive size. ie if it's an 80 gig drive, it will say something like

(f:)
74.52 Gb NTFS
Healthy (System)

rclick it. select 'change drive letter and paths'. click 'change'. pick, anything high (ie drive N .. anything higher than the total number of drives you have). click OK and OK .. fixed.
