1. Check your local library for history, news, and planning archives.

2. Look for a local history group (web, library) and ask them for help. I've done this before and they are, generally speaking, happy to help.

3. You can get info here: http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/listedbuildings
To find the listed building you are interested in, you have the option to enter keywords from its address, then choose to search either by Council or by Parish/Burgh, or search by map.

4. There are a lot of old pictures of Edinburgh buildings here:http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_P/0_pictures_full_index_views.htm

5. http://jura.rcahms.gov.uk/PASTMAP/start.jsp offers a list of the buildings in the area.

6. http://www.codexgeo.co.uk/dsa/index.php This may be helpful, depending on the age of the building. The dictionary offers the opportunity to search for information about particular buildings as well as important architects from 1840 to 1940.

7. This man has a series of websites on Scottish listed buildings, including Edinburgh, so he may be able to help you: http://www.scotcities.com/gerry.htm

the building would have either a Building website - it has to advertise itself and its residence
OR
it will be listed within Edinburgh archives.

In either case you need to go to the city archives and find some information/photographs and there ya go... done.

Try Edinburgh City Council Archaeology Service (Sites and Monuments Record) http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/leisure/museums_and_galleries/services/CEC_archaeological_service or the RCAHMS http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/ or the city library.
