I'm pretty sure that if you're only in the transit area at the airport, you don't need a U.S. visa, but you should check with the airline to be certain.

Follow-up: I was right, here's confirmation: http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/reports/INS/e0205/intro.htm

You must be in possession of a valid passport and valid travel documents (i.e. plane tickets) to your final destination. If you have these documents, you don't need a visa just for the airport.

You can no longer stopover in the US to change planes without having a visa to enter the US. This regulation has been in effect in August of 2003, eliminating the old Transit Without a Visa program that had previously in effect since 1952.

You must therefore apply for a visa to enter the US if you wanted to change planes in L.A. for Sao Paolo.

Most U.S. airports have an area that is strictly for international passengers who are waiting for a connecting flight; presuming you don't leave that area, you shouldn't need a visa. I do suggest contacting your airline or travel agent to find out what sort of identity document(s) you might be required to have just in case of an emergency - it's always good to be prepared.
