Hi Shan, To have a successful relationship you must have TRUST with out TRUST you have nothing. TRUST is the first 1. The second 1 is being Honest never lie or keep a scret that will end up hurting your relationship. The third is RESPECT. You must RESPECT each other and the property of each other. Most of all YOU MUCH LOVE EACH OTHER TO NO ENDS. All 4 are most important. Your relationship will not work without these 4 factors. I know it works because that's what my true soulmate and i feel and do... It works!!! A Friend.

I think in order to have a truly healthy and loving relationship mutual respect and admiration are mandatory. A relationship without these things is not worth having...

There is no yelling or name-calling or put-downs. During disagreements you try to see your partner's perspective, and let them go if they don't want to talk. You give your partner time and space when they need it and you don't lie to spare their feelings or to spare yourself from their anger.

You encourage and support each other's hobbies and encourage and support one another's desires to change. Jealousy is never an issue because even if both people have some insecurities, they are not insecure about the relationship.

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." - The Velveteen Rabbit, by Marjorie Williams

Trust and mutual respect. You have to trust the person you love, trust the relationship. Without trust, nothing can build on. The relationship would be very meaningless, if you suspect your spouse/partner doing things behind your back. It is also very meaningless if there is no mutual respect to each other. Mutual respect on individual needs.

Everything needs to be mutual -- trust, respect, understanding, affection, faith, support, and the most important, love.

The previous answerers got it bullseyed, but there's also chemistry and compatibility. Without such understanding, no relationship/temporary one at best.
