I am using my acer ferrari 4500 serries laptop with its built in wireless conected to my roomates router. I have a built in nic card as well and want to connect that to my desktop machine's nic card and connect to the internet through the laptop's wireless running now. Is this possible with just the right configurations or would i need a patch cable as well? Maybe I would have to have this laptop running server software? Just curious probably a dumb question haha??

XM is right however setting up this way is a pain not to mention in order to access the net on the desktop the laptop needs to be on also! Internet connection sharing would also need to be enabled on the laptop. Its far easier and less prone to failure if you just buy a cheap wireless nic card.

Of course you need a patch cable. You gotta connect the computers together somehow. What you need to get hold of is a crossover ethernet lead... good computer shops should stock them.

Once that's done, the easiest way is to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your laptop to share it's web connection. This will set up the ferrari as a router between its NIC and the wifi NIC... and will make a diskette for (or give you instructions on how to) configuring the desktop to connect to the laptop. ICS is a component of Windows - you may need to install it or it may be installed already, but it's free.

Alternatively... and only a bit more expensive... buy a wifi adapter for your desktop as well. That way you can use your desktop to surf without having to have your laptop turned on. In the UK a crossover cable will cost you ... about £5 from a retail store. A wifi adapter will cost between £20-£25 from a retail store. I'm sure the relative prices will be similar in the US.

Impossible. You will have to decide wither to go wireless or nic to nic.If you go nic to nic then all you will need is a cross-over cable or a router with ethernet cords for each port,if you try to run wireless and nic to nic you will fry your laptop to say the least REMEMBER THIS: Somtimes in certain situtations it's ok to go wireless BUT what some won't tell you is,if you're using wireless and you're online it only takes somebody to be in the near area of where you're at and with their computer they can hack into your system and get all the info about you and your computer such as passwords to say the least and this accomplished because they're going off of your freqency(think of it this way, outside using a cordless phone and your neighbor turning on their scanner or ham radio, next thing you know your whole conversation is going across the airwaves) I know this for a fact because I'am in law-enforcement and half of the people we arrest is because they fail to realize we can hear them. So,I would highly recommend you to go nic to nic.

Just make all the connections, reboot all the computers and laptops and router. If you dont have connectivity, run a network setup wizard on each machine. And make sure you have a crossover cable between Nic cards.

Get something called crossover Ethernet cable, and yes you can route laptop's Internet connection to desktop; there are so many ways to do it, but couldn't you just run a cable to your roommate's router? Or get a wireless card for your desktop is another good way to do it.

yes you could but the through put you would get (speed of connection) would be a real dog. better to spend 10-12 on a wireless connector for your desk top. but iff you do want to do plan A.

ensure both pcs are in the same work group
xover cable between pc and laptop
bridge the network connections on the laptop
manually asign an ip address on the pc
and run network set up wizards between both pc's

but would you be able to fix it if it went wrong ???? I suggest you spend the 10 pounds

best of luck

If you are running Windows XP. Get a cross clipped patch cable connect it between you Laptop and Desktop.

Give the Ip address as 192.168.0.1 in ur Laptop Lancard and Subnet mask as 255.255.255.0

Go to your Desktop and give the IP address as 192.168.0.2 and subnet as 255.255.255.0 and Gateway and DNS as 192.168.0.1.

Now in the Laptop right click the Network Card select advanced and select enable internet connection sharing.

You are done no need for any software.

If you still need help you can get back to me. :)
