Yes having clots during a period is normal for some women. Those clots is the lining that is being shed during the period. This is also one of the reasons some of us will have cramping during our period too, because the uterus is pushing out the lining that is not needed for the month.

One way that I knew I had heavy blood flow is when sometimes I would be lying down for a while and then I would start to move a little bit, then the flow would too. But the ultimate way I knew was by the amount of cramping I had (and heavy periods for me was a sign of what turned out to be endometriosis). So what I tried to make sure I did was increase the amount of iron I took in during my period. I found that helped ease some of the cramping a lot.

If you end up with clots bigger than the size of quarter, or the cramps (if you have any) affect your ability to function on a daily basis pls get in touch with your dr to have this checked out.

Clots are normal! When you have your period you don't just lose blood from your body. Your body has stored enough fluids and material in your uterus for a month to make a home for a baby to grow in. If you do not conceive during that time, your body eliminates all of that "stuff" because it doesn't need it. That is why a woman does not have her period while she is pregnant and "bleeds" for several weeks after she has a baby. She needs that material as a "nest" for her little one, but needs to shed it after the baby comes. An example of the same thing is like when you go to the bathroom. Your body gets rid of the solids and liquids that it doesn't need throughout the day when you go pee and poop. This is the kind of thing that woman don't talk about very openly, but you need to find a friend or a female relative that you can be comforable asking what seems to be embarrassing questions. It is best to know what is supposed to go on with your body so that you 1) don't worry for no reason and 2) know if there IS a problem.

If you compare your current level of flow with that of previous years, you should be able to tell if your periods are "normal" - normal is different for each woman and could relate to the duration and quantity of each period. If the flow is so heavy that your life is disrupted and restricted even for a day or so, then a trip to the doctor may be required to investigate if there is a problem. There are various medical options to resolve heavy periods.

alot of women get clots so i don't think thats something you should really worry about, but if you feel that your periods are heavy, or getting heavier or more painful, pay a visit to your doctor and share your concerns. there are many things they can do to help, dependant on your age you could try the pill to lighten and regulate your periods, or something like Mefenamic Acid which is an NSAID. Basically it helps control the amount of blood loss and cramping during your period. Dont be embarrased or worried about going to see your doctor, they will be willing to help, and happy to disscuss your concerns and reassure you.

all the best!
