can I take a product and improve it without infringing on the existing copyright?

Your design MUST be significantly different from the copyrighted item.

My thought is, imagine if the item your improving on was your copyrighted item originally and some one came along and "made the same thing" only better.

patent office will give you some good info on how much change is required. Submit it and see what happens.

A copyright is what it says . You may not copy it at all. You would have to prove that it wasn't an improvement to something. Copyrights run out after 100 yrs I think, so just wait a while. Or better still go invent something new.
