Keep trimming the tops to the height you want and they will bush out

If you trim the tops, the energy will be put into the growth shoots on the sides. If you have sandy soil you could do with adding some organic matter so it does'nt leach nutrients.

what you want is a hedge of suitable height but lush lateral growth, enough to mesh together to give a good hedge, start by limiting the height to what you want,by clipping off the tips, watch for lateral growth,as time goes on the lateral or side growth will improve, pinching out tips here could also make for denser growth but should not be too drastic, soil improvement with humus or organic matter will generally benefit the trees.

You may have left it too late as you have should have started earlier. But try a gentle clipping all round and a more robust clip to their tops. Keep the tops pruned down to the present height and hopefully they will gradually fill out.

Cut the tops off and this will force the nutrients to grow bigger and longer branches lower down.
