Unfortunately the only way to install 2000 with xp is to reformat the drive that is xp is on (then partition the drive with at least 10g for 2000 and 10g for xp), if you try to install with xp there it will state that it has detected an older version of windows and will not allow an installation.
More expensive way of doing this would to be to buy another Harddrive and install 2000 there, the drives are around $50 and can be found at http://www.pricewatch.com
I was like you and wanted to not reformat unfortunately that was the only way to dual boot with xp. Hopefully Vista will not have this limitation but it is MS.
