Shrapnel is usually fragments of things that go into a person when a bomb or some such thing blows up something..IE building, tank, plane..all parts of something that was destroyed violently, usually in an explosion. Hope this helps!!

Shrapnel is a generic term for things which are ejected from a violent event, specifically, an explosion. It includes parts of the device which caused the explosion and any other material which is propelled away from the ignition point. A person nearby, who dies from a rock which was ejected as a result of the bomb dies from trauma caused by the shrapnel. The fast particulate matter which happens to come in contact with a person, causes a death, not from the explosion from a specific device as such, but from the trauma caused by the rocks and other debris radidly ejected from the site of the explosion. There was no one person who invented this type of thing, since the shrapnel can come from other than the matter in the bomb itself. In the case of a thing like a mortar or a hand grenade, the shell of the device is designed to break apart into many smaller pieces and scatter around the detonation point, in the hope that a warm body will be near and subject to the trauma caused by these many small pieces being propelled outwards by the explosion, will do enough damage to kill the warm bodies nearby, or at least injure enough so the forces have to expend energy to tend to the wounded which distracts from the frontal assault of the invading troops. It was during WWI, thet the object of war changed from a one-on-one to one-on-many event with the advent of the machine gun. Before the machine gun, combat was mostly a one-on-one event, shoot the other guy, stab the other guy, all up close and personal. The machine gun made it such that one guy could defend a point and kill everyone who came near. War went from personal to impersonal, and that is where shrapnel comes into play in modern day warfare, the indescriminate killing of anyone in the area of the explosion of a device which is designed to fragment and scatter fragemnts over a wide area. The terrorist bombers in Iraq and Isreal take advantage of this by wrapping their bomb devices with things like common nails and screws, in the hope that the shrapnel (the nails and screws) thrown out by the bomb will kill more people than the singular device would by itself. War is an ugly thing and anyone who has been there can attest to this. I have never been in a war, but as a member of the military, I was prepared to go into this kind of situation. I have no facts to support this thought, but I think more people die from shrapnel than from a direct hit from a bullet.
