Only if you focus the energy derived from the abstinence of that gratification in a manner that produces more focused states of mind. Otherwise what you have is a lot of unfocused energy and the results are less of a focus on life and other issues that leaves you with a feeling of wishing you has focused your energy at least during the period which the delayed gratification maintained the building up of this energy

If it is handled properly, meaning not used as a form of punishment, then yes it would lead to a more focused mind.

However, if it is used improperly, as a form of self punishment or ultimate denial altogether then no it would only lead to frustration that would find an alternate outlet.

Self discipline requires delayed gratification. Delayed gratification can be turned into something sinister if it's manipulated by wrong thinking and psychological illness.
