you convert the 1/2 to decimals. so it would end up like 12.5% of 90. then convert the percentage into decimals then multiply it to the base. the equation would become 0.125(since you move the decimal point two places to the left when converting percentage to decimal) * 90 = x. the answer would be 11.25

12(1/2)% of 90
= 12(1/2) / 100 x 90 = 25 / 200 x 90
= 5 / 40 x 90 = 5 / 4 x 9 = 45 / 4
= 11(1/4)

As a general rule you can express as decimal :
12 1/2 * 90 / 100
= 125 * 90 / 1000
= 11.25
It can save time to recognise common percentages, like 12.5% = 1/8th
90 / 8 = 11.25

All you have to know to solve this is that 1/2 = 0.5 and "percent" (Latin: per centum) means "divided by 100" and "of" means multiply.
Sometimes math seems more like a language question!
so 12 1/2 = 12.5 and
12.5 % = 12.5 / 100 and
"of" 90 = X 90
so 12 1/2% of 90 means 12.5 / 100 X 90 = ?
I think you can do it yourself now, right?

It is worked out the same way you work out whole numbers. The rules of adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing fractions holds here also.
Let's solve the problemgiven here.
12 1/2% of 90.
12 1/2 = 25/2
So, 25/2/100*90
= 25/200*90
=11.25

12 1/2 % of 90
= 12.5% of 90
= 12.5/ 100 * 90
= 12.5/10 *90 ( cancel both 100 and 90 by the table of 10)
=125/10* 9/5
=25/10 *9
=5/2*9
=45/2
=22.5

In my opinion the easiest way is to start by finding 1%
90/100 = 0.9 which is 1% of 90
you want 12.5% so multiply 0.9 by 12.5 = 11.25 (or 11(1/4) )

12 1/2% = 12.5/100 = 0.125
0.125*90 = 11.25
Percent is just a number - how many per centum, centum being 100
