I heard she got a couple of DUI's and got caught driving under suspension,she refuses to work,has utilities shut off,has been evicted from a rental unit,etc... I would like to get custody of my children to better take care of them

Go to family court and file a custody petition. You do not have to find out anything you don't already know. Go save your children. Do it immediately. The signs are all there. What more do you want to know. Call the department of social services and report her, they will do an investigation. Don't forget to tell them you are the biological father and that you have gone to family court for custody. God Bless you for being a caring father. Good Luck!

I would think that as long as you never got in trouble with "the system" and had custody of your kids taken away from YOU, you would be able to ask an authority (the local police station, for one) how to find something like that out.
What I don't get is why you haven't been able to find out from your kids directly what's going on?

Get a family lawyer to advice you first and then go to court and take your children she can't possibly be taking care of the children if all these things you just mentioned ... take your children and take care of them yourself,
