I used tampons for a while starting after 18 and I found that it had no impact on the length of my period.

As for insertion of the tampon I found that I had to insert a second finger to help guide the tampon up in to my vagina. I would also sometimes lubricate the area to make it easier if I wasn't going to use a finger. The suggestion about a hot bath to help the muscles relax by one of the other posters is also a good idea.

I no longer use tampons due to medical issues unrelated to tampons themselves.

Tampons do not shorten your period, but they're much more comfortable than sanitary towels!
Take a hot bath so you're relaxed, then follow the instructiosn on the tampon box to insert it - it may take a few tries, especially if you're not used to your body.

Good luck! :)

no it wont shorten your period, you take the wrapper off, stick the end with the tampon into your vagina, and push the insertion tube with your finger till the tampon is all the way in with just the string hanging out.
